| I spent more than 20 years in
the printing industry and learned enough to know that authors who use publishers
are typically out of luck when it comes to being in the driver's seat.
One author in San Diego submitted
his book to 238 publishers over 18 months before he finally got accepted.
That's a year-and-a-half of lost revenue and data matter that was out of
date and replicated by scores of others. Lost time in the publishing industry
is lost revenue.
An associate of mine wrote a
book on verbally abusive relationships of which I provided a communications
technique for one of her chapters. When her publicist booked her on the
Oprah Show it was her entry into the the best seller's club. There are
150,000 books published in the United States every year and only 1% sell
more than 5,000 books. That is the designation of the best sellers club.
My first book was released in
2007 I sell about 1,000 books a year only while speaking. Patricia Evans
has sold about 400,000 of her verbally abusive series of books. She makes
36 cents per book. That's $144,000 over 17 years compared to my $17 profit
per book or $127,500 over 7 1/2 years. Patricia also gets fees upfront
from the publisher and it's usually around $10,000. She has 7 books so
that's about $70,000 in advances plus her $144,000 which is $214,000 divided
by 17 years is $12,588 a year.
Patricia has to do her own marketing,
book speaking and interview engagements.
I met an author in San Francisco
a couple of weeks ago who spent years researching and interviewing peace
makers around the world. His publisher is being less than cooperative and
as hard as he works, the author has not been able to make enough money
to survive.
